Water Necessary for Weight Loss

Friday, March 26th, 2010

If you are truly honest, are you eating well?  Are your portions correct?  Are you exercising at the intensity, duration, and frequency that you need to be?  Are you still carrying around a few extra pounds?  The problem might be you are not drinking enough water.  In a nutshell, the liver’s job is to metabolize fat.  However, if the kidneys are water-deprived, the liver has to do double duty and pick up the slack for the kidneys.  Thus, it can’t get to the fat as quickly or efficiently as it could if the kidneys were functioning optimally.  This literally sets you up to store, rather than metabolize, fat.  If you live in a state of slight chronic dehydration, your body holds on to it’s fat stores because fat retains fluids.  Once you begin giving your body all the fluids it needs, it no longer needs to hang on to the fat to maintain the necessary water balance.

Smart Habits Enhance Weight Loss Success

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Successful weight loss depends on more than just nutritional choices and exercise.  While certainly those two areas have the most dramatic impact on whether or not your weight loss goals will be met, reaching a desired weight is not the end of your journey.  Weight maintenance depends on many healthy habits in order to keep the pounds off.  For instance, did you know that if you don’t drink enough water, your body sometimes mistakes thirst signals for hunger?  Wouldn’t it be a shame to reach for food when your body is really craving water.  Water also fills the stomach up so that should a craving come along you might be able to ride it out because you reached for a tall, cold glass of water with a twist of lemon.  Another secret of successful weight maintainers?  Fiber!  Fiber helps control hunger by slowing down the digestion of your food and slowing down the amount of glucose that hits your bloodstream.  Think healthy habits for long-term weight loss success.

How Exercise Impacts Weight Loss

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Everyone knows that exercise is touted as necessary for good aerobic health, bone strength, and overall well-being.  But did you know that exercise does way more than that?  When we work out at a vigorous pace, several bio-chemical changes happen in our body hormonally that impact our ability to be successful at the weight loss game.  For instance, endorphins are a mood-enhancing hormone that reduces emotional eating.  Glucagon is released which acts the opposite of insulin.  Insulin is the fat storage hormone; glucagon enables fat to be burned as fuel. A good workout also impacts key appetite hormones, Ghrelin and Peptide YY.   Exercise that has an aerobic component was more effective at this than non-aerobic weight training. Aerobics burns calories during the activity; and then it reduces grehlin (the appetite-simulating hormone) while increasing Peptide YY (the appetite-suppressing hormone). These findings make exercise a key component in being able to make good choices with diet. Diet is 85% of the weight loss equation, and anything that will help us make good choices is a tool worth employing.

Develop Your Strategy for Researching Diet Plans

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

The internet is a great tool for researching diet plans online. The most important aspect of selecting a diet plan is considering how it will fit into your lifestyle. If you don’t like to cook or don’t have time for it, then it’s important to select something that offers meal replacements or meal delivery systems. Also, there is no such thing as one-size-fits all when it comes to weight loss. Issues like health conditions, personal preference, activity level, and personal values all come into play. There are many excellent weight loss plans available; selecting the right one will help you shed the pounds and keep them off. While losing weight is high on your radar now, keep in mind that learning how to eat sensibly will in the long run push you over the finish line.

Select diets with a proven track record to assess. Read the success stories. Talk to people who have used the diet and see if their stories are comparable to yours. Work on establishing a mental preparedness for your weight loss journey so that when temptation hits, you will have some momentum and conviction to carry you through.  For more information on developing a diet mindset, check out www.thedietmindset.com.

How Are Your New Year’s Resolutions Going?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

New Year’s resolutions to lose weight seem to fade away into February.  Don’t let that happen this year!  By adopting the diet mindset, you can realize your weight loss dreams and keep the pounds off for good.  Let’s face it — dieting can be hard.  But with the proper tools in place, momentum can be built which develops optimism as the pounds go and your energy levels soar.  For instance, nutrient-dense whole grains, fruits, and vegetables contain complex carbohydrates and fiber. These superfoods control hunger longer because the fiber content slows digestion of the sugars. Simple carbohydrates found in candy, soft drinks, white flour products, and juice are empty calories with little to no nutritional value that will cause a blood sugar spike and crash, leaving you tired, drained and hungry.

Smart Food Choices on a Budget

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

You are excited about the prospect of eating healthy in 2010, but are concerned that healthy foods are more expensive than junk food. This is not necessarily the case – through careful planning, eating healthy and losing weight doesn’t have to break the bank. For example, beans, a rich source of minerals, protein and fiber, as well as eggs, are two nutrient-dense food sources that can easily be incorporated into your diet plan. For the same price as a doughnut, you can purchase a serving of vegetables such as broccoli or cauliflower. Other economical ideas to eat healthy include choosing store brand or private label food items; planting a garden and canning your crop; shop the perimeter of the store for the healthier foods such as produce, meats and fish, and dairy. Avoid the inner aisles which contain more processed foods and junk foods. Avoid packaged drinks (unless they are part of your diet plan). Most packaged juices, teas and sodas contain loads of sugar and chemicals. A good diet plan can help you identify recipes which will work within your budget. Here’s to a new you in 2010!
