Have you noticed as you get older that belly fat is becoming more of a problem than it used to be? So what’s up with that? Well, sometimes our changing hormones can affect how we store body fat. What was once a non-issue ends up becoming more of an issue later on in life. For women, approaching menopause is often a key indicator in how likely they are to store body fat in their bellies. As estrogen levels drop, so does our metabolism. Lower estrogen levels also tend to make us feel more fatigued, which may cause us to want us to exercise less. It’s important to not fall into that trap, however. Exercise is one of the key strategies for fighting against middle age spread.

It’s important to assess the best diet plans for you, because when it comes to dieting, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. We all have different lifestyles, activity levels, preferences, and sometimes health issues; therefore, the right diet plan for you might not work so well for me. For instance, individuals who have a tendency toward high blood sugar levels might want to consider an eating plan that tends to restrict carbohydrate levels, like the Medifast plan, the Diabetic diet plan, or the Atkins Diet. For people who tend to be very active, the Mediterranean plan might be a good choice. The eDiets company has over twenty diet plans to choose from, so if those other plans don’t resonate with you, eDiets may have something for you to succeed with.

If you have attempted to lose weight a few times, you realize that weight loss doesn’t just happen in a vacuum. In other words, a lot of the pieces of the weight loss puzzle simply have to fit together in order for the pounds to come off and stay off. Simply put, the right mindset and mental preparation must be in place before anything else will work. You can have a great diet plan, but if you don’t stick to it, you won’t succeed. You can know the importance of physical activity, but if you don’t “just do it,” that resource remains untapped. Developing good habits is hard to do because it means that bad habits must be overcome. Is willpower the answer? Not always. Often it is a multi-faceted approach that may use will power as one of the minor pieces, but ultimately is all about loving yourself and caring for yourself. Sometimes we need to deal with some emotional baggage before we can actually pull it all together. That’s okay — we all need somebody to lean on.

Solid plans with documented science behind them, like the Medifast Plan, the Atkins Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, and the Diabetic Diet, are some of the best diet plans around for long-term weight loss. If you are truly honest, are you eating well? Are your portions correct? Are you exercising at the intensity, duration, and frequency that you need to be? Are you still carrying around a few extra pounds? The problem might be you are not drinking enough water. In a nutshell, the liver’s job is to metabolize fat. However, if the kidneys are water-deprived, the liver has to do double duty and pick up the slack for the kidneys. Thus, it can’t get to the fat as quickly or efficiently as it could if the kidneys were functioning optimally. This literally sets you up to store, rather than metabolize, fat. If you live in a state of slight chronic dehydration, your body holds on to it’s fat stores because fat retains fluids. Once you begin giving your body all the fluids it needs, it no longer needs to hang on to the fat to maintain the necessary water balance.

Many people trust the Mayo Clinic staff to educate us on our health and well-being. When it comes to exercise and weight loss, most of us are well aware that leading an active lifestyle is crucial if you want to succeed on your weight loss journey. It really does come down to calories in, calories burned, in order to achieve your goals. At a minimum, to enjoy moderate health you should aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. You also need to do resistance training at least twice per week. For weight loss, it is recommended that you exercise about 60 minutes per day most days of the week. This can only be achieved if you put it first on your list — schedule it like you would any important appointment. Many people find that if they work out first thing in the morning and get it out of the way, it makes for a very pleasant start to the day where you feel as if you’ve just achieved something good for yourself.

Exercise is one of those things you either love or you hate. When folks say they love it, many people roll their eyes and think the person must be one of those “health freaks” or perhaps they assume the avid exerciser is vain about their looks. In reality, exercise can really be a joyful, even fun experience once you develop the habit and begin reaping the benefits. Did you know that doctors say that exercise is just as powerful as antidepressants in dealing with depression? The biochemical changes that take place during vigorous exercise are powerful mood enhancers that also block pain. And what about quality of life? Many individuals who practice a sedentary lifestyle would be shocked to know that their choices may cause them to be immobile in their golden years. I don’t know about you, but I want to remain strong and independent as long as I am able to. And some good endorphins don’t hurt, either!

Successful weight loss depends on more than just nutritional choices and exercise. While certainly those two areas have the most dramatic impact on whether or not your weight loss goals will be met, reaching a desired weight is not the end of your journey. Weight maintenance depends on many healthy habits in order to keep the pounds off. For instance, did you know that if you don’t drink enough water, your body sometimes mistakes thirst signals for hunger? Wouldn’t it be a shame to reach for food when your body is really craving water. Water also fills the stomach up so that should a craving come along you might be able to ride it out because you reached for a tall, cold glass of water with a twist of lemon. Another secret of successful weight maintainers? Fiber! Fiber helps control hunger by slowing down the digestion of your food and slowing down the amount of glucose that hits your bloodstream. Think healthy habits for long-term weight loss success.

A diagnosis of diabetes finds you living in a new world where all of your choices seem to be of monumental importance. All of a sudden, the current research and directives of the American Diabetes Association become paramount. But how do you manage these lifestyle changes without going into information overload? The Diabetic diet is a great tool to help you gain control over these challenges you face. For instance, in order to manage blood glucose, diabetics must avoid unrefined carbohydrates including candy, cakes, cookies, and soft drinks; instead, it’s important to replace old habits with healthy choices like whole-grain breads, cereals, beans, peas, vegetables and whole fruits. A fitness plan you can be excited about is an excellent tool to help your body better utilize insulin. Support and encouragement help you to say no to temptation and to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Diet plans are an excellent way of providing the structure you need to make these important changes. Cultivating a diet mindset can help you achieve your goals and help you gain good health.

Everyone knows that exercise is touted as necessary for good aerobic health, bone strength, and overall well-being. But did you know that exercise does way more than that? When we work out at a vigorous pace, several bio-chemical changes happen in our body hormonally that impact our ability to be successful at the weight loss game. For instance, endorphins are a mood-enhancing hormone that reduces emotional eating. Glucagon is released which acts the opposite of insulin. Insulin is the fat storage hormone; glucagon enables fat to be burned as fuel. A good workout also impacts key appetite hormones, Ghrelin and Peptide YY. Exercise that has an aerobic component was more effective at this than non-aerobic weight training. Aerobics burns calories during the activity; and then it reduces grehlin (the appetite-simulating hormone) while increasing Peptide YY (the appetite-suppressing hormone). These findings make exercise a key component in being able to make good choices with diet. Diet is 85% of the weight loss equation, and anything that will help us make good choices is a tool worth employing.

The internet is a great tool for researching diet plans online. The most important aspect of selecting a diet plan is considering how it will fit into your lifestyle. While losing weight is high on your radar now, keep in mind that learning how to eat sensibly will in the long run push you over the finish line.

New Year’s resolutions to lose weight seem to fade away into February. Don’t let that happen this year! By adopting the diet mindset, you can realize your weight loss dreams and keep the pounds off for good. Let’s face it — dieting can be hard. But with the proper tools in place, momentum can be built which develops optimism as the pounds go and your energy levels soar. For instance, nutrient-dense whole grains, fruits, and vegetables contain complex carbohydrates and fiber. These superfoods control hunger longer because the fiber content slows digestion of the sugars. Simple carbohydrates found in candy, soft drinks, white flour products, and juice are empty calories with little to no nutritional value that will cause a blood sugar spike and crash, leaving you tired, drained and hungry.
