Successful weight loss depends on more than just nutritional choices and exercise. While certainly those two areas have the most dramatic impact on whether or not your weight loss goals will be met, reaching a desired weight is not the end of your journey. Weight maintenance depends on many healthy habits in order to keep the pounds off. For instance, did you know that if you don’t drink enough water, your body sometimes mistakes thirst signals for hunger? Wouldn’t it be a shame to reach for food when your body is really craving water. Water also fills the stomach up so that should a craving come along you might be able to ride it out because you reached for a tall, cold glass of water with a twist of lemon. Another secret of successful weight maintainers? Fiber! Fiber helps control hunger by slowing down the digestion of your food and slowing down the amount of glucose that hits your bloodstream. Think healthy habits for long-term weight loss success.

The Atkins Diet has long been recognized as one of the most popular diet plans, and has enjoyed unprecedented popularity not once, but twice in the last 50 years. With it’s renewed surge of popularity, Atkins is firmly entrenched among top diet plans as a viable means to managing weight loss with minimal discomfort and deprivation. Based upon the science that our bodies contain their own means of tapping into fat stores called ketosis, which happens by limiting carbohydrates, many have enjoyed this diet and have reaped the benefits of improved energy, clarity, and minimal hunger because of stable blood sugar levels. Think about what body fat really is — it’s excess carbohydrates stored as potential fuel for later usage. As we continue to overeat, the excess carbohydrates are stored without being utilized.
As far as diet plans go, Atkins is here to stay because it has revolutionized so many people’s lives. It continues to have a large, loyal following. For those who had a sensitivity to carbohydrate consumption for many years and piled on the fat, Atkins has provided freedom!

Everyone knows that exercise is touted as necessary for good aerobic health, bone strength, and overall well-being. But did you know that exercise does way more than that? When we work out at a vigorous pace, several bio-chemical changes happen in our body hormonally that impact our ability to be successful at the weight loss game. For instance, endorphins are a mood-enhancing hormone that reduces emotional eating. Glucagon is released which acts the opposite of insulin. Insulin is the fat storage hormone; glucagon enables fat to be burned as fuel. A good workout also impacts key appetite hormones, Ghrelin and Peptide YY. Exercise that has an aerobic component was more effective at this than non-aerobic weight training. Aerobics burns calories during the activity; and then it reduces grehlin (the appetite-simulating hormone) while increasing Peptide YY (the appetite-suppressing hormone). These findings make exercise a key component in being able to make good choices with diet. Diet is 85% of the weight loss equation, and anything that will help us make good choices is a tool worth employing.

New Year’s resolutions to lose weight seem to fade away into February. Don’t let that happen this year! By adopting the diet mindset, you can realize your weight loss dreams and keep the pounds off for good. Let’s face it — dieting can be hard. But with the proper tools in place, momentum can be built which develops optimism as the pounds go and your energy levels soar. For instance, nutrient-dense whole grains, fruits, and vegetables contain complex carbohydrates and fiber. These superfoods control hunger longer because the fiber content slows digestion of the sugars. Simple carbohydrates found in candy, soft drinks, white flour products, and juice are empty calories with little to no nutritional value that will cause a blood sugar spike and crash, leaving you tired, drained and hungry.

Trusted by physicians for over 25 years, the Medifast plan was medically designed as a low calorie diet to promote weight loss by forcing the body to burn stored body fat. With a Medifast diet review, you can find out why doctors prefer this diet to others when prescribing weight loss to their bariatric patients. Every time carbohydrates are over-eaten, the body stores them as body fat – in other words, body fat is simply stored fuel for future use. Medifast limits carbohydrates, breaking this cycle of storing fat. This is great news for individuals such as diabetics or people with Syndrome X, a pre-diabetic state. The Medifast couldn’t be easier to execute with five Medifast meals per day plus one lean protein & Green veggies meal. The Medifast meal replacements include bars, soups, shakes, eggs, oatmeal, and puddings. Regular consumption of small meals provides a steady stream of calories which keeps blood sugar levels stable, eliminating the roller coaster of high carbohydrate meals being stored as more body fat.
Now’s a great time for savings on the Medifast plan with Medifast coupons. Make 2010 the year you finally put to rest weight loss issues.

Managing your diabetes is tough enough without trying to research acceptable recipes and carbohydrate contents. A good diabetic diet plan is a great tool for helping you manage your diabetes, improving your health and reducing the chance for diabetes-related complications such as heart disease, circulation issues, cancer and others. The plan should also provide tools to help you modify or replace your favorite recipes with healthful alternatives. Featured in the diet should be low glycemic index fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, lean meats, fish, poultry and low fat dairy products. A diet rich in these sources will also provide energy and enable you to manage your blood sugar levels more effectively because of the high fiber content of the foods. The diet should include a healthy breakfast to set the stage for blood sugar stabilization throughout the day. Small, regular meals, plenty of water, lots of fruits and vegetables, and regular exercise should also be encouraged in your plan.

You are excited about the prospect of eating healthy in 2010, but are concerned that healthy foods are more expensive than junk food. This is not necessarily the case – through careful planning, eating healthy and losing weight doesn’t have to break the bank. For example, beans, a rich source of minerals, protein and fiber, as well as eggs, are two nutrient-dense food sources that can easily be incorporated into your diet plan. For the same price as a doughnut, you can purchase a serving of vegetables such as broccoli or cauliflower. Other economical ideas to eat healthy include choosing store brand or private label food items; planting a garden and canning your crop; shop the perimeter of the store for the healthier foods such as produce, meats and fish, and dairy. Avoid the inner aisles which contain more processed foods and junk foods. Avoid packaged drinks (unless they are part of your diet plan). Most packaged juices, teas and sodas contain loads of sugar and chemicals. A good diet plan can help you identify recipes which will work within your budget. Here’s to a new you in 2010!

There are two major draws to the Mediterranean diet plan that many other diet plans fall flat in. First and foremost, it isn’t a diet — it’s a lifestyle that works. It is built around a series of foods that promote pleasure and flavor in eating — foods such as olive oil, nuts and seeds, produce, red wine, lean proteins, beans and legumes. People groups who live in the Mediterranean area are diverse ethnic groups with different flavors in their diets. But one thing they have in common is the strong tie to a seafood and produce based diet with olive oil as it’s primary source of fat.
The second major draw to this eating plan is that these people groups enjoy some of the lowest mortality and disease rates in the world. For more information on this diet plan or a review of the best diet plans, check out eDiets to find a plan that fits for you.

The Atkins Diet has been around for decades as an effective alternative to healthy eating. Based upon research known about how our metabolism works, our body has it’s own fat-burning mechanism called ketosis. We enter ketosis when we limit the number of carbohydrates we consume. When the body has an ample supply of carbohydrates, it burns them for fuel. If we consume too many carbs, our bodies cannot burn them all, so the excess is stored as body fat for later usage. That’s where the Atkins Diet comes into play! As the diet restricts carbohydrates consumed, the body is forced to tap into those fat stores and burn them as fuel. Additionally, hunger is not an issue on this diet as ketosis effectively suppresses hunger while the protein and fat in the diet keeps you feeling full longer.
As far as diet plans go, Atkins is an effective plan with many meal options and snacks available, whether you wish to cook yourself or purchase pre-packaged meals and meal replacements.
