Shift Work Danger Medical Danger – Diabetic Diet Plan is Preemptive Strike

January 19th, 2012

A new study conducted by Dr. Virginia Barbour, who is the chief editor of PLoS Medicine indicates that shift work can place a person at heightened risk for developing obesity and type 2 diabetes.  The combination of unnatural sleep patterns coupled with unhealthy diet choices that inevitably follow were cited as contributing factors, and were noted as occupational health hazards.  Dr. Barbour told ABC News “We have a long-standing interest in publishing on the diseases and risk factors that cause the highest burden of disease.  We could suggest that employers need to take unhealthy eating very seriously, to the extent that they consider that unhealthy foods are essentially environmental hazards, and that they should consider what the implications are of exposing their employees to high levels of such hazards in the form of vending machines and fast-food restaurants.”  The answer?  Following a nutritious, low calorie eating plan that includes lots of fresh, healthy choices such as the diabetic diet plan.

Belly Fat Increases Cardiovascular Risk says Harvard Health Report

November 17th, 2011

In a health blog published by the Harvard University School of Medicine this year, the Editor of The Harvard Men’s Health Watch, Harvey Simon, M.D., said that belly fat increases cardiovascular risk.  Dr. Simon warned that abdominal obesity in men increases their risks for many health problems — including diabetes, stroke, heart attack and erectile dysfunction. “The real danger zone is a waist that exceeds 40 inches in circumference. It’s calories that cause fat to accumulate. Whenever you take in more calories than you burn, the excess will be stored in fat cells.” The article cautioned that people who store weight around their waste are more at risk than those who store it on their hips or thighs — “but excess fat is harmful no matter where it is stored on the body.”
